it takes additional training and coaching to become excellent

competencequadrant_ENProject Managers are highly demanded in all sorts of businesses and industries, in private as well as in public sectors. A lot of professionals, especially career starters, are attracted to the role of project management. The challenging responsibilities, possibilities for self-development and career opportunities contribute to this appeal.

Project managers that are in the field for a while, know very well that it takes a lot more than a positive approach and common sense in order to be an excellent project manager. Today’s project manager needs to be equipped with a variety of skills, knowledge and techniques in order to stand tall. In the end the project manager needs to incorporate a new attitude and working style to lead projects in such a way that they achieve what is really needed in an organization.

The Project Competence Programme is designed to provide a complete range of competences for professionals and organizations required to lead and direct excellent projects.

These competences are divided into 4 areas:

Core Project Management Techniques

This includes essential techniques to initiate and start, manage and close a project properly. They aim at managing scope, quality, time and budget to drive a project towards its predefined goals. They also aim at defining and managing the requirements and a strategic business case, involve interested parties and prepare for uncertainty, changes and risk. Tools like templates and project management software can support these techniques.

Methodologies & Certifications

Structured project management means managing the project in a logical, organized way, following defined steps, with clear roles and responsibilities. A project management methodology is the written description of this logical, organized approach. The lessons from pitfalls and hurdles that project managers encountered in the past are now condensed in methodologies and certification standards. They provide us with an overview of the relevant knowledge, skills, techniques and attitudes a project manager must be able to apply in his work. A project management certificate proofs that a project manager has reached a certain (defined) level of understanding, skills or experience. Supported standards include IPMA, PMI, PRINCE2® and SCRUM.

Behavioural and Interpersonal Skills

Projects are people’s work. In projects, people collaborate in a new, often unfamiliar setting. Leadership is needed to move the team and the stakeholders to be committed to the same outcome. This can be tough but also grateful: it is about working with these people. A good project manager understands how to motivate and facilitate the team. He senses the interests of all parties and finds support and commitment for his approach. Communication, leadership, presentation, negotiation and conflict handling are often underestimated, but crucial to be successful.

Organizational and Contextual Insights

Projects arise from a given organizational, strategic, cultural and technical background with the purpose to deliver benefits and strategic objectives within that context. However, corporate organizations sponsoring the projects, have limited resources and need to make choices. It requires organizational sensitivity, communication and political flair to assure corporate management keeps committed to the project and the project keeps fulfilling the customers’ needs.
